Working Equitation is the fastest growing equestrian discipline in the USA.
It consists of four Trials: Dressage, Ease of Handling (Obstacle Course), Speed, and Cattle. Due to limitations with availability of cattle, some competitions consist of the first three Trials only.
There are 7 Levels: Introductory (Walk/trot), Novice A, Novice B, Intermediate A, Intermediate B, Advanced and Masters.
Riders may ride in either English, Western or Doma Vaquera style.
In Arizona, AZWEC provides education to riders, promotes Working Equitation in the State and organizes competitions. Information is available on their website at www.azwec.org.
USAWE is the national organization for Working Equitation. Dressage Tests, Obstacle Lists and the Rulebook can be found at www.usawe.org.
Dressage Tests are ridden in the Standard 40M X 20M arena. Dressage Tests are available for download at www.usawe.org
Ease of Handling consists of a course of Obstacles selected from the official list. Riders are sent the Course Map in advance and are allowed to walk the course prior to competition.
Speed Trial is a slightly different course of obstacles from the Ease of Handling Trial, and is timed.
In the Cattle Trial, the rider is required to sort a designated cow from a herd, then, with the assistance of three other riders, herd it down the arena and into a pen. There is a three minute time limit.
